Integration of technologies in the classroom

The new tech generation has been hailed as the saviour to education. New apps, tech-based curriculums, and web-based assessment software have been created and developed to make the lives of those entering education as a teacher easier. “The use of technology during whole-class instruction can foster student engagement for auditory and visual learners. Integrating simple technologies such as Power Points, games, internet homework assignments, or online grading systems can be difference makers in students' growth in the classroom”, (School of Education, 2020).However, for some this new educational outlook brings in fear and dread.  When Confucious, (561 B.C.) the grandfather of education, first began his work in education in ancient Greece, he did not have revolutionized technologies or a standardized curriculum. He instead used passion and knowledge to impart learning to those with a thirst for education. Although perhaps not all of us who are technologically inept are as old...

Moodle

Being a teacher in 2022, it is essential to be aware of the limitations that not being face to face with your students have. Teachers and students have begun to transition away from the traditional classroom. “With the various innovations in communications networks hitting the world, it is interesting to note that the traditional means of imparting knowledge in schools and colleges or institutes of higher education have also been impacted to a considerable extent”, (Distance Learning Portal, 2020). Online Universities, Colleges, High Schools and Elementary schools have embraced the need to teach online and as such the management of the classroom has had to evolve. For me, working in an international school, the challenge has been that the international student body has been limited, in some cases, by the inability to travel. It may be possible for me to teach in person to the majority of the students, however some students have been trapped by the closing of borders. For this, ma...

Class Dojo and Tapestry

As a teacher in an international school, it is important to understand the need for effective and positive communications with parents. The right way of communicating with parents one of the key aspects of teaching, especially when it comes to Early Years. I am a parent and a teacher at the same time, so when I want to bring something to parents, I initially look at that from parent’s side then bring it to a parent. Both, parents and teachers want holistic development of a child in all areas of their learning. “Parenting and teaching are two very similar jobs. The primary objective of both these jobs is to mold young minds into something great. Therefore, parents and teachers must always be working together. Regular school communication with parents is needed. There are many benefits of parent-teacher relationships on child development”, (Pew Research Center, 2020). Long past are the times where a teacher would simply speak to the parents after school. In the COVID age, safety pr...

Learning Theories

In this post I would like to write a reflection on George Siemens' article about "Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age" and write about other learning theories Constructivism, Cognitivism and Behaviorism which stand behind using technologies in Teaching and learning from my own practice.     In my early years of teaching around 2010, technology was not developed that well and was not used widely in Education. Only sending emails was popular at that time but was not the main way of communication at schools and universities. We used to have journals of Attendance, marking on the notebooks and writing on the whiteboards. These were all tiring for the teacher, because you need to have enough time to check and mark everyone’s homework and you need to make sure that everyone can see the notes on whiteboard well. But nowadays, as technology has rapidly developed and has become essential part of our everyday life, we know what knowledge can be found where and w...
